FIBROMIA: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Abstract

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized by chronic and diffuse musculoskeletal pain, often associated with fatigue, sleep disturbances, and impaired quality of life. Conventional treatments, based on antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and analgesics, show variable effectiveness and may be associated with relevant adverse effects. Therefore, scientific interest in medical cannabis as a complementary therapeutic approach has increased. The main active compounds of the plant, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), interact with the endocannabinoid system, modulating neurophysiological processes related to pain, sleep, and mood. This integrative review aims to critically analyze the available evidence on the effectiveness of medical cannabis and cannabinoids in the management of fibromyalgia, with emphasis on pain, sleep quality, and quality of life. This study is an integrative literature review conducted in previously defined databases, based on established inclusion and exclusion criteria. PubMed/MEDLINE, BVS/LILACS, SciELO, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for publications from 2008 to 2025. The analyzed studies suggest that cannabinoids may contribute to pain reduction and sleep improvement in some patients. However, the literature still presents methodological limitations, heterogeneity of formulations, and a lack of long-term studies, requiring caution in the clinical incorporation of these products.
