EFFECT OF CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM, AND VITAMIN B6 ON MINIMIZING PREMENSTRUAL SYMPTOMS: A REVIEW STUDY

Abstract

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is represented by a set of physical, behavioral and emotional symptoms, which may culminate in changes in eating habits. Eating sweets and fatty foods can intensify PMS symptoms due to the low concentration of micronutrients: Calcium, Magnesium and Vitamin B6. This study aimed to discuss the effect of calcium, magnesium and vitamin B6 in minimizing premenstrual symptoms. This is a narrative review of the literature, based on the following databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), National Library of Medicine (PUBMED), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) and Latin American and Latin American Literature Caribbean in Health Sciences (LILACS). The menstrual cycle is divided into three phases: follicular, ovulatory and luteal, with each cycle having an average duration of 28 days. Serum calcium levels are lower during the luteal phase and an exacerbation of restlessness and depression symptoms may be observed, so adhering to a diet rich in this micronutrient and/or supplemental may be helpful in mood disorders. Magnesium is important for energy production and is involved as a cofactor in more than 300 enzymatic systems, acting significantly for the control of PMS; it is also one of the most indicated treatments for migraine, reduced water retention and anxiety. Vitamin B6, on the other hand, works to reduce unwanted premenstrual symptoms by increasing levels of serotonin and dopamine. Supplementation is recommended in order to add nutrients, bringing efficacy in the treatment of premenstrual syndrome.
