Abstract

Currently, composite resin is a restorative material widely used in dental offices, with the aim of restoring the aesthetics of the patient's smile. For this to occur, the various optical properties of the material must be equivalent to those of the lost tooth structures. Among these we can highlight fluorescence, which makes these restorations similar to the natural tooth structure when exposed to ultraviolet light. This work aims to evaluate the influence of polishing on the optical effect of fluorescence in composite resin restorations when exposed to black light. In this study, 20 circular specimens were prepared with nanohybrid composite resin (Llis, FGM Dental Group) in color A1 for enamel. One side of the test piece was pressed against a sheet of glass, which provided a smooth and polished surface, while the other side of the test piece was roughened with the help of 400 grit sandpaper. The tests were evaluated in a dark chamber illuminated by a black light. The experiment was conducted in a single-blind manner and all samples were evaluated by the same observer. After analyzing all specimens in duplicate, it was not possible to identify differences in the fluorescence of the samples. Therefore, we can state that, according to the methodology used, there was no difference in the optical fluorescence property due to the change in the surface roughness of the tested resin.
