Abstract

The use of Metformin by patients being treated for Diabetes Mellitus may lead to hypovitaminosis of cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12), which is crucial for blood cell formation and nervous system function. In this Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA), with a sample of 100 patients having a mean age of approximately 65.5 years, 75% of whom are female, an average use time of 7.5 years, and daily doses ranging from 500 to 2000 mg. A significant percentage of the sample was in the borderline range for B12 levels (190-300 ng/L). These patients are primarily in the age group above 60 years, which may be attributed to decreased intestinal absorption of vitamin B12 due to aging, in conjunction with the use of Metformin. Moreover, patients on higher doses of the medication (1000-2000 mg/day) tend to present with deficiency or borderline levels of B12. Additionally, lower levels of the vitamin were also observed in patients with longer durations of medication use. It is concluded that regular monitoring of B12 levels in individuals using Metformin is important, and evaluating possible preventive supplementation strategies for cyanocobalamin is necessary to prevent deficiency and potential complications.
