Respiratory diseases particularly impact children in low-income urban areas, with bacterial pneumonia being the leading cause of child mortality. With COVID-19, clinical diagnoses have varied, raising questions about the impact on non-related disease hospitalizations. Objective: This study aims to compare pre-pandemic and first-year-of-pandemic hospitalizations for respiratory conditions. Method: This descriptive and retrospective approach relied on DATASUS sources. The target population comprised patients aged 1 to 9 years, excluding COVID-19 cases, between January 2019 and December 2020. Analysis and Discussion of Results: In this population, there was a 64.91% reduction in hospitalizations when comparing 2019 (n = 3,639) and 2020 (n = 1,275). Several hypotheses can explain this reduction. It's possible that pandemic-related isolation measures contributed to curtailing the spread of respiratory pathogens, resulting in a significant decrease in hospitalizations. Conversely, the possibility of underreporting of non-COVID-19 respiratory conditions is noteworthy. Concluding Remarks: In conclusion, future research is suggested to delve into the analysis of reasons and implications associated with this reduction, as demonstrated in this study.
