Abstract

The review addresses risk factors in Parkinson's disease (PD), highlighting its multifactorial complexity and clinical implications. Objective: To synthesize recent evidence on risk factors associated with PD, explore genetic, environmental, and microbiological aspects, and discuss clinical and therapeutic implications. Methodology: This bibliographic review was conducted through a search of scientific literature published in the last 15 years, using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results and Discussion: We highlight the significant contribution of genetic and environmental factors in the etiology of PD, and the emerging role of the gut microbiome. Pathogenic mechanisms, including inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and proteomics, were discussed about neurodegeneration in PD. Conclusion: The importance of a personalized and holistic approach to the effective management of PD is emphasized, aiming not only to treat symptoms but also to modify modifiable risk factors to improve patient's quality of life.
