THE USE OF CARBAMAZEPINE AND LAMOTRIGINE IN THE TREATMENT OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA

Objective: To conduct a literature review on Trigeminal Neuralgia and the use of drugs Carbamazepine and Lamotrigine in its treatment. Methods: A research and selection of scientific articles that addressed the topic of the subject, 'the use of the drugs Carbamazepine and Lamotrigine in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia' was conducted. The descriptors selected for the research were: trigeminal neuralgia, facial pain, Carbamazepine and Lamotrigine. From June to August 2021, a research was conducted in the Scielo and PubMed electronic databases, in addition to an active research in references. Results: 21 articles and 5 books were evaluated within the theme of the descriptors and an integrative literature review was conducted. 20% characterized Carbamazepine (CBZ) as the gold standard in therapy, 5% indicated that CBZ was not effective in the treatment, 10% characterized Lamotrigine (LTG) as a good treatment option, 5% indicated that LTG does not have a significant place in therapy , 5% used another antiepileptic drug as treatment, 45% pointed out that both the disease and the therapeutic forms should be better studied to demonstrate the veracity of an effective treatment and 10% characterized the agreement of first and second line of treatment of CBZ and LTG respectively. Final Considerations: Trigeminal neuralgia is an extremely debilitating disease that affects the patient's biopsychosocial environment, as it is a relatively rare disease, many dentists are not aware of the types of treatment for the pathology.
