Chronic kidney disease is considered the gradual loss of kidney function, and its main causes are chronic non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and the elderly population the most affected. This review aimed to survey the main methods of evaluating food intake of hemodialysis patients, especially with elderly people. The preparation of the review consisted of the following stages: identification of the hypothesis, survey of the question, search in the literature, selection and evaluation of the studies found, interpretation of the results and presentation of the synthesis of the knowledge evidenced. The review followed the following guide question: What are the methods present to evaluate the food intake of the elderly and what are the main outcomes observed? Research in the VHL, PubMed and Science Direct databases found 406 articles. Excluding duplicates between databases, 11 articles remained. When evaluating the characterization of the research subject, it was observed a lower frequency of studies that were conducted with the elderly (36.3%). Regarding the analysis of the food survey used, most studies (63.6%) used a three-day food record (AR), one used a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and three described the use of the 24-hour recall (R24h). Considering the growth of the elderly population worldwide and the demand for dialysis procedures, it is important to develop further studies that assess the food intake of elderly people, in order to develop and suggest appropriate intervention that impacts on the adequacy of food consumption and nutritional status.
