Abstract

This study aims to analyze the existing scientific productions about the use of pain relief measures in newborns. This is a literature review of the Scientific Electronic Library - SCIELO, Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences - LILACS, Nursing Database - BDENF and PUBMED databases. The following descriptors were used: Pain, Newborn and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The inclusion criteria were: articles published between 2011 and 2021, with free access to the full texts, articles in Portuguese, English and Spanish and related to the theme: duplicate articles, incomplete articles, abstracts, reviews, debates, articles published in proceedings of events and unavailable in full, Within these searches 360 articles were found, however, after the exclusion of duplicate and incomplete findings, they were restricted to 100 works. At the end of the analyses, 25 articles were included in the review, because they best fit the proposed objective. Pain assessment in the newborn is the first step to be followed, because by means of this technique it will be possible to make the right decision in such procedures to be performed by the responsible team at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
