Abstract

Objective: we investigated which type of pneumatization (morphology) of the sphenoid sinus is most common in patients with cleft lip and palate. Literature review: The methodological structure used to conduct this study follows the proposal of the Joanna Briggs Institute. The National Library of Medicine (PubMed/MEDLINE), Scopus, Embase, Web of Science and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) databases were searched. Of the 129 initial studies, 3 were included in the final analysis, 3 of which were retrospective studies. The main morphology of the sphenoid sinus most commonly found in patients with cleft lip and palate is the sellar type. The most common extensions of the sphenoid sinus were anterior-type pneumatization, body-type pneumatization, and pterygoid process pneumatization. Discussion: The sphenoid sinus is the paranasal sinus that presents the most variations in its morphology. Its morphology is directly related to important surgical complications, such as transsphenoidal and orthognathic surgeries. Patients with cleft lip and palate undergo orthognathic surgery to correct bone discrepancies in the jaw.
