Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common neoplasia among women, and mastectomy is one of the primary surgical treatments. Although effective, this intervention can result in the development of lymphedema, a chronic condition characterized by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. This study aims to analyze the importance of physical therapy in preventing lymphedema in women who underwent mastectomy, through a review of literature published between 2019 and 2024. The methodology involved the selection of peer-reviewed articles with well-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results indicate that physical therapy interventions, such as manual lymphatic drainage, muscle strengthening exercises, and compressive therapies, are effective in preventing and controlling lymphedema. It is concluded that physical therapy plays a crucial role in postoperative management, promoting well-being and preventing complications.
