Abstract

The microbiota or intestinal flora is the combination of bacteria and fungi that reside in our gastrointestinal tract. They play a role in producing vitamins, enzymes, assist in cellular renewal, nutrient absorption, and also control our immune system, prevent the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria, and produce about 90% of all the body’s serotonin, a hormone responsible for well-being. The microbiota begins to form after birth; the mother is the first source of microorganisms for the newborn, yet some studies indicate that bacterial colonization may begin even before birth. Studies show that our quality of life is directly related to good intestinal health. Different types of bacteria in the gut are associated with psychological and psychiatric disorders, and they can influence everything from the brain to cardiovascular protection. Another interesting fact is the intestinal microbiota in human aging, which directly affects aging through the gastrointestinal system. The process of cellular aging is na intrinsic process associated with the imbalance of the intestinal flora. The intestinal microbiota is the community of microorganisms that inhabits the human gastrointestinal tract. Although the intestinal microbiota is located in the intestine, it can have a significant impact on skin health and various skin conditions.
