Abstract

Eating disorders (EDs) represent a complex group of psychological disorders that seriously affect the physical and mental health of individuals, characterized by dysfunctional eating patterns and extreme concerns about weight and body shape. Objective: to explore diagnostic approaches and the latest treatments for EDs. Methodology: This is a bibliographical review, using articles present in the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Scielo. Original articles and systematic reviews in English, Spanish and Portuguese published between 2013 and 2024 were included, which addressed the diagnosis and therapeutic approaches to EDs. After analysis, 21 articles were selected to prepare this bibliographic review. Results and Discussion: Diagnostic methods for EDs have improved over the years, with significant advances in the accuracy and speed of detection. The use of specific diagnostic criteria, such as those from the DSM-5, is essential to ensure the consistency and validity of diagnoses. Nutritional interventions are a crucial component in the treatment of EDs, especially for anorexia nervosa, where nutritional rehabilitation is vital for physical and mental recovery. Conclusion: Research into genetic, biological and sociocultural factors continues to be essential to deepen understanding of the mechanisms underlying eating disorders and develop more effective treatment strategies. The inclusion of nutritional interventions and the involvement of the family in the treatment are fundamental for the recovery and well-being of patients.
