SENSORY, MOTOR FUNCTIONS AND BALANCE IN THE ELDERLY: A BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW

Human aging is a natural phenomenon that has as its characteristics several physiological, biological, psychological and social changes that directly interfere in the lives of the elderly, which can compromise their functional locomotion and, consequently, their autonomy and independence. The present study is an integrative review of the literature that analyzes sensory, motor functions and balance in the elderly. The objective was to analyze, through an integrative review, the impact of sensory and motor functions on the balance of elderly people. To this end, a bibliographic review was carried out based on articles available in the databases Public Medline Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), Virtual Health Library of the Ministry of Health (VHL MS ), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online (Medline) and through Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs). It was observed that over the years, declines related to muscle strength, reduction in lean body mass, vestibular and visual problems and the reduction of mechanoreceptors are some of the factors that directly impact the balance of elderly people. The research results showed that this set of physiological changes during aging are important for body balance. It was possible to conclude that sensory and motor functions have a significant impact on the balance of the elderly, in addition, these changes when combined with comorbidities bring losses related to functionality, autonomy and the practice of activities of daily living (ADL's).
