DENTAL TREATMENTS AND MENTAL DISORDERS: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW OF CONTEXTS, BARRIERS AND POSSIBILITIES
Abstract
This research aimed to carry out an integrative review on the influence exerted by oral treatments on the lives of people with mental disorders. The objective was to highlight a predisposition that these individuals have to acquire oral problems, their difficulty in accessing a dental network and oral health education that is necessary both for these individuals and for dental professionals. The search for articles was carried out in the PUBMED database, in English, Spanish and Portuguese, using descriptors and Boolean operators, and 12 articles constituted the research as they were in line with the previously elaborated criteria. Among the most relevant findings, we highlight the ease of these patients with mental disorders to develop complications in the mouth throughout their lives when compared to people without disorders, due to medication issues and the daily routine of each of these groups. Likewise, financial and social barriers also play an important role in the goals of access and problems in the continuity of oral care for people with mental disorders. In addition, investing in oral health education for these patients and better training dentistry professionals to treat them leads to an improvement, a decrease in self-esteem and oral care for these people, thus enabling them to see themselves as protagonists in their own lives.
