CONTROL OF THE IMAGINARY: THE RECEPTION OF MACHADO DE ASSIS

Abstract

Focusing on what Costa Lima has called “control of the imaginary”, glimpsed since the book that marks the entry into his “mature” phase of theorization, Mimesis and Modernity, originally published in 1980, this article intends to trace, through the analysis of the reception of work of Machado de Assis, the singularity of the way in which a certain type of control of the imaginary is updated in Brazil in the 19th and 20th centuries, in contrast to its way of acting in Europe.
