Abstract

The concrete structures of sewage treatment plants play a very important and significant role in the development of cities, as do bridges and viaducts. Although they have different natures and purposes, the common point of these structures is that it is inconceivable to leave them at the mercy of deterioration caused by aggressive agents, whether organic or environmental. The objective of this article is to present a systematic evaluation of the various materials used as protective coatings for concrete structures of sewage or wastewater treatment plants. The coating materials are studied in detail, according to characterization tests and then compared for diagnosis and performance analysis. The results obtained in the analysis will be of practical use to managers of sewage treatment structures, since they present guidelines for decision-making in choosing the type of protective coating to be used in these structures.
