THE USE OF SELF-ETCHING ADHESIVE AND FLOWABLE RESIN AS A PROTECTIVE ADHESIVE INTERFACE FOR DENTIN AGAINST NAOCL IRRIGATION IN ENDODONTIC TREATMENT: AN IN VITRO STUDY

Abstract

This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of using a self-etch adhesive combined with flowable resin on dentin exposed to sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) irrigation during endodontic treatment. Thirty-nine bovine teeth were divided into three experimental groups: G1 – Self-etch Adhesive + Flowable Resin; G2 – Self-etch Adhesive + Flowable Resin + NaClO + Adhesive; and G3 – NaClO + Adhesive. Bond strength was assessed using the microshear test (MPa), and fracture patterns were analyzed under optical microscopy.  Analysis of variance and Tukey's test were performed (p>0.05). Statistical analysis revealed significant differences among groups (p=0.02). Groups G1 (10.9 ± 2.6 MPa) and G2 (10.7 ± 1.9 MPa) showed higher bond strength than G3 (8.2 ± 2.4 MPa). It was concluded that applying a protective adhesive interface composed of self-etch adhesive and flowable resin prior to NaClO irrigation preserves dentin integrity and bond strength, representing an effective strategy to enhance the longevity of post-endodontic restorations.
