HOSPITALIZATIONS FOR FEMALE GENITAL PROLAPSE IN THE SOUTHEASTERN REGION OF BRAZIL: A POPULATION-BASED ANALYSIS (2018–2025)

Abstract

Female genital prolapse is a common condition in gynecological practice, especially among older women, due to the weakening of pelvic support structures. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological profile of hospitalizations for female genital prolapse in the Southeast Region of Brazil from 2018 to 2025, using data from the Hospital Information System of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SIH/SUS). Variables related to the number of hospitalizations, average length of hospital stay, age distribution, deaths, and race/ethnicity were evaluated. During the analyzed period, 79,868 hospitalizations were recorded, with a significant reduction in 2020 and 2021, possibly associated with the reorganization of hospital services during the COVID-19 pandemic and the temporary suspension of elective procedures. From 2022 onward, a progressive increase in hospitalizations was observed, with a peak in 2024. Most cases occurred in women aged 60 years or older, particularly between 60 and 79 years, highlighting the strong association with population aging. The average length of hospital stay showed a decreasing trend over the years, suggesting improvements in surgical techniques and postoperative care. The number of deaths was low compared to total hospitalizations, indicating low in-hospital lethality. It is concluded that female genital prolapse remains epidemiologically relevant, requiring preventive strategies and adequate healthcare planning in the context of Brazil’s demographic transition.
