EPIDEMIOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF DENGUE IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS IN THE STATE OF AMAZONAS, BRAZIL, FROM 2020 TO 2025
Abstract
Dengue is a major public health problem in Brazil, with a substantial impact on pediatric populations, particularly in endemic regions such as the Amazon. This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological, clinical, and spatial aspects of confirmed dengue cases among pediatric patients in the State of Amazonas, Brazil, from 2020 to 2025. An observational, descriptive, retrospective study with a quantitative approach was conducted using secondary data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System. Confirmed dengue cases in children and adolescents up to 15 years of age were included based on symptom onset date. Temporal, sociodemographic, clinical, laboratory, spatial variables, hospitalization, outcomes, and case fatality were analyzed using Excel® 2013, RStudio® version 4.5.2, and QGIS® version 3.40. A total of 9,191 cases were identified, with the highest number recorded in 2021 (30.9%) and a subsequent increase in 2024 (17.4%). More than half of the cases occurred during the first four months of the year. Adolescents aged 10–15 years accounted for 48.4% of cases, with a slightly higher proportion among males (52.9%). Most cases were classified as dengue without warning signs (99.0%) and confirmed by laboratory criteria (59.4%). Spatial analysis revealed a marked concentration of cases in Manaus (49.3%). Clinical outcomes were largely favorable, with a cure rate of 97.2%, although dengue-related deaths were recorded. These findings highlight the sustained burden of pediatric dengue in Amazonas and emphasize the importance of strengthening surveillance systems, diagnostic capacity, and timely healthcare for children and adolescents.

Currently serves as Manager of Communicable Disease Surveillance (GVDT) at the Dr. Rosemary Costa Pinto Health Surveillance Foundation (FVS-RCP), working in the planning, monitoring, and coordination of epidemiological surveillance, prevention, and control actions for communicable diseases in the State of Amazonas.
