DENGUE MORTALITY IN BRAZIL IN 2022: SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS AND REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION

Abstract

Dengue is an arboviral disease mainly transmitted by the female mosquito Aedes aegypti, representing a significant public health problem in Brazil. Between 2014 and 2021, more than 7 million cases were reported in the country, with the highest concentration in the Southeast region. This study aimed to characterize the sociodemographic profile and regional distribution of dengue-related deaths in Brazil in 2022. This is a descriptive epidemiological study with a quantitative approach, based on secondary data obtained from the Mortality Information System available at the Department of Informatics of the Brazilian Unified Health System. A total of 809 dengue-related deaths were recorded during the analyzed period, with a higher concentration in April and May. The Midwest region presented the highest mortality rate, followed by the South region. A predominance of deaths was observed among females, self-reported white individuals, and those aged 80 years or older, while lower frequencies were identified among individuals aged 10 to 14 years. Regarding social variables, individuals with 4 to 7 years of schooling and married status were more affected. These findings reveal important regional and sociodemographic inequalities in dengue mortality, highlighting the need to strengthen surveillance, prevention, and healthcare actions.
