SOCIOECONOMIC, TECHNOLOGICAL, AND PRODUCTIVE DYNAMICS OF SMALL-SCALE FISHERIES IN THE JURUÁ VALLEY, ACRE, WESTERN AMAZON
Abstract
Artisanal fishing plays a fundamental role in food security and income generation in Amazonian communities. In the Juruá Valley, in the state of Acre, this activity represents an important economic base for riverside populations, although important information gaps remain regarding its productive structure and socioeconomic dynamics. This study analyzed the socioeconomic, technological, and productive profile of artisanal fishing in the municipalities of Cruzeiro do Sul, Mâncio Lima, and Rodrigues Alves. The research was conducted between August 2017 and August 2018 using a mixed methodological approach. A total of 232 questionnaires were applied to artisanal fishers registered in local fishing colonies, complemented by direct observation and documentary analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicate a high level of socioeconomic vulnerability among fishers. The monthly income of 81.3% of respondents does not exceed one minimum wage, while the illiteracy rate reaches 31.9%. Technological differences were also observed in the fishing fleet, with higher levels of motorization in Cruzeiro do Sul and Rodrigues Alves, whereas paddle-powered boats predominate in Mâncio Lima. Regional fishing is multispecific, with emphasis on species such as mandi, piau, curimatã, branquinha, and pacu. Major constraints include limitations in the cold chain, restricted access to credit, and weaknesses in fisheries monitoring and enforcement.
