FRENCH REVOLUTION AND ITS IMPACTS ON MUSEOLOGY AND HERITAGE PRESERVATION
Abstract
The French Revolution was a political event arising from the population’s sense of injustice toward the clergy and the nobility, whose consequences went beyond the political sphere and impacted other areas such as museology and conservation studies. Thus, this article derives from an undergraduate research project on history, art, museology, and fashion, investigating the relationship between historical events, museums, conservation practices, and clothing. Based on bibliographic references such as books, articles, and theses, the study addresses themes such as history, art history, fashion, and museology. It was found that the French Revolution had a direct impact on museology studies, since the destruction of assets from the Ancien Régime created the need for conservation actions with educational and heritage purposes. Therefore, the text proposes a contextual study of France in the period prior to the Revolution, the causes that led to the rupture of the prevailing political system, as well as a brief study of museums and fashion, especially that influenced by Marie Antoinette.
Author Biographies
Undergraduate student in the Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion at the State University of Maringá. CNPq scholarship holder and member of the research group “Laboratory of Textile Heritage, Clothing and Museology” (LPVM).
PhD in Textile Engineering from the University of Minho, Portugal (2018), with the degree revalidated as a PhD in Design by Anhembi Morumbi University (2018), in the field of Design, Art, and Technology. Master’s degree in History from the State University of Maringá (2011). Specialist in Marketing Administration from FESP Curitiba (1999). Bachelor’s degree in Textile Engineering from UEM (1997). Coordinator and advisor of the extension project Tecidoteca (textile flags collection) since 2009, at the Department of Design and Fashion.
