DENTAL MAKEUP VERSUS BIOMIMETIC STRATIFICATION IN COSMETIC DENTISTRY: A NARRATIVE REVIEW OF THE PERCEPTUAL, OPTICAL, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS

Abstract

Contemporary aesthetic dentistry has incorporated technological advances that have increased restorative predictability, but have also favored aesthetic standardization. In this context, two approaches stand out: biomimetic stratification, based on the reproduction of the tooth's multilayer architecture, and superficial interventions, called dental composition, focused on chromatic uniformity. Objective: To analyze, through an integrative review, the conceptual, technical, optical, perceptual and psychological differences between these approaches. Materials and methods: Integrative review in the PubMed, SciELO and ScienceDirect databases with the descriptors "Dental Aesthetics" and "Composite Resins". A total of 1,579 studies were identified, of which five met the eligibility criteria after screening. The studies were organized into analytical domains: conceptual foundations, technique, optical behavior, morphological integration, perceptual stability, and psychological implications. Results: Biomimetic stratification demonstrated greater control of optical properties, better morphological integration and greater perceptual naturalness. Superficial interventions, on the other hand, showed a greater dependence on lighting and a tendency towards aesthetic standardization, with possible limitations in perceptual stability. Conclusion: The distinction between the approaches involves not only technical aspects, but also optical and psychological implications. Biomimicry is more aligned with the biological complexity and facial identity of the patient.
