APPLICATION OF BIOPOLYMERS FOR OIL AND GREASE REMOVAL FROM PETROLEUM INDUSTRY EFFLUENTS
Abstract
The total oil and grease (TOG) content is one of the key parameters to be analyzed for the final disposal of produced water. In the face of this problem, the use of alternative methods for treating this water is necessary. Thus, polymers emerge as an alternative because they are technically feasible compared to more commonly used methods, biodegradable, and non-toxic. Guar gum and hydroxypropyl guar are biopolymers with important physicochemical characteristics and three-dimensional structures. Through the cross-linking of polymeric chains by borate ions, in the presence of salts, a salting-out effect occurs, reducing the solubility of the polymer gel in water. This process results in the oil being trapped in the collapsed gel, and the separation of oil and water phases. The TOG was determined using the UV-VIS spectrophotometry method. The TOG was analyzed after collapse at different times of 3, 6, 9, and 24 hours. This process resulted in a removal of over 90% of the oil for guar gum at a concentration of 4 g/L, within 3 hours after collapse, while for hydroxypropyl guar, at a concentration of 5 g/L, this occurred only after 6 hours following collapse.
