DEPRESSION IN OLDER ADULTS: PATHOPHYSIOLOGY, RISK FACTORS, AND THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES

Abstract

Population aging has contributed to an increase in depression among older adults, a prevalent condition that is frequently underdiagnosed and has a significant impact on quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the pathophysiology, risk factors, and therapeutic approaches to depression in this population. This is an integrative literature review, with a qualitative approach, conducted in the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature and PubMed/Medline databases, including publications between 2016 and 2026, totaling 29 studies. The findings indicate that depression in older adults has a multifactorial etiology, involving neurobiological alterations and psychosocial factors. Factors such as advanced age, comorbidities, social isolation, and polypharmacy increase vulnerability. Evidence suggests greater effectiveness of combining pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. It is concluded that depression in older adults requires interdisciplinary and individualized management. The importance of early identification of risk factors and the integration of evidence-based therapeutic strategies is highlighted, aiming at promoting quality of life and healthy aging.
