PROVIDING COMPREHENSIVE DENTAL CARE WITHIN THE BRAZILIAN UNIFIED HEALTH SYSTEM: AN EXPERIENCE REPORT
Abstract
Primary Health Care (PHC) is the main entry point to the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), with the Family Health Strategy (FHS) as the structuring axis for organizing care, guided by the principles of universality, equity, and comprehensiveness. In this context, the systematization of professional experiences contributes to strengthening care practices and health literacy. This study aims to report the experience of an oral health team working within the FHS in the municipality of Belém, in the state of Pará, highlighting the management of comprehensive dental care, from emergency care to rehabilitation and follow-up in PHC. The team consisted of two resident dentists, a practicing dentist, and an oral health technician. The report demonstrates the importance of professional training, individualized treatment planning, and coordination between levels of health care for the effective implementation of comprehensive care. It is concluded that the continuous professional development of staff and the understanding of the health network are fundamental to promoting health and improving the quality of life of users.
