MULTIPROFESSIONAL CARE FOR INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCING ALCOHOL WITHDRAWAL CRISIS IN THE HOSPITAL SETTING: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Abstract

Harmful alcohol use is a major public health issue, associated with high morbidity and mortality rates and multiple biopsychosocial consequences. Objective: To analyze the literature on the importance of the multiprofessional team in the care of patients experiencing alcohol withdrawal crises in hospital environments. Method: This is an integrative literature review, conducted through searches in the MEDLINE, LILACS, BDENF, and Google Scholar databases, using the descriptors: Patient Care Team, Alcohol Abstinence, and Hospitals, combined with Boolean operators. After applying the eligibility criteria, eight studies were selected to compose the final sample. Results: The findings showed that multiprofessional care is essential for promoting comprehensive care, encompassing physical, psychological, and social aspects. The main contributions included strengthening the therapeutic bond, improving treatment adherence, providing family support, and implementing harm reduction strategies. On the other hand, weaknesses were identified, particularly in communication among professionals, articulation with the psychosocial care network, and continuity of care after discharge. Additionally, challenges such as insufficient training, work overload, and persistent stigma negatively impact the quality of care. Conclusion: The effectiveness of care for patients undergoing alcohol withdrawal depends on the qualification of the multiprofessional team, integration among health services, and the strengthening of humanized practices. There is a need for investment in continuing education and in the organization of the healthcare network to improve clinical and social outcomes for this population.
