INTERVENTIONS PERFORMED BY BASIC LIFE SUPPORT BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Abstract

Objective: To identify the interventions that can be performed by Basic Life Support (BLS) teams in pre-hospital care before the arrival of Advanced Life Support (ALS). Method: This integrative literature review was conducted according to the model proposed by Mendes, Silveira, and Galvão. The research question was structured using the PVO strategy. Searches were carried out in the SciELO, LILACS, BDENF, and PubMed/MEDLINE databases using DeCS/MeSH descriptors related to prehospital care, basic life support, and emergencies. Initially, 4,643 studies were identified, and eight studies met the eligibility criteria and composed the final sample. Data were analyzed through descriptive synthesis and critical interpretation of findings. Results: The studies demonstrated that several interventions may be safely performed in the BLS context, including high-quality chest compressions, early defibrillation, early recognition and management of anaphylaxis and opioid intoxication, as well as the use of naloxone, epinephrine, telemedicine, and portable ultrasound. However, limitations related to structured protocols, continuous training, and regulatory support were identified. Conclusion: The findings suggest that BLS teams have the potential to expand their effectiveness in pre-hospital care, contributing to early patient stabilization. Nevertheless, the implementation of these interventions in the Brazilian context still depends on adequate regulation, professional qualification, and strengthening of emergency care organization.
