THE EFFECTS OF THERMAL TACTILE GUSTATORY STIMULATION IN PATIENTS WITH DYSPHAGIA: AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

The act of swallowing forms an essential task for human survival. When changes appear during this process (they can be of neurological, anatomical or physiological causes of a pathological nature), dysphagia appears. Tactile thermal gustatory stimulation is intended to work on the perception of sensory stimuli that are being ejected in the orofacial region. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the use of ETTG interferes in the rehabilitation of patients with dysphagia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study is characterized as an integrative literature review and for this research the electronic databases were used: SciELO and PubMed following the inclusion and exclusion criteria, performing a critical analysis of the articles. The results that were found detect the demand for new research, as well as support health professionals when making decisions about clinical conduct. This study was methodologically prepared based on the following question: “Does the use of TTG interfere with the rehabilitation of patients with dysphagia?” RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: According to the articles used in this study, it was noted that gustatory thermal tactile stimulation is a therapy that uses sensory stimuli, which favors self-perception, which results in swallowing safety. CONCLUSION: The present study analyzed that ETTG interferes in the rehabilitation of patients with dysphagia. This technique plays an important role in the rehabilitation of patients with swallowing dysfunction. However, it was highlighted that ETTG was ineffective in patients with dysphagia who are diagnosed with severe dementia.
