ORAL HEALTH AND QUALITY OF LIFE: THE ROLE OF THE DENTIST IN COMPREHENSIVE CARE IN PUBLIC HEALTH
Abstract
The role of the dentist in public health has been consolidated as a central element in health promotion and in improving the population’s quality of life. This study aims to analyze the influence of oral health on quality of life, as well as the contributions of the dentist to comprehensive care in collective health. This is a literature review based on the analysis of scientific publications and official documents related to public health and the organization of dental services in Brazil. The findings indicate that, with the expansion of access to health services and the recognition of health as a universal right, dental practice has moved beyond an exclusively curative and individualized approach, incorporating preventive, educational, and interdisciplinary actions. The integration of oral health into collective care strategies is highlighted, as well as the implementation of the National Oral Health Policy — “Brasil Sorridente” — which enabled the expansion of services, including the creation of Specialized Dental Centers and the increased provision of oral rehabilitation. It is concluded that the dentist’s role in public health significantly contributes to reducing health inequalities and promoting the population’s quality of life, consolidating dentistry as an essential component of comprehensive care.
