DEFORESTATION AND AGRICULTURAL GDP IN RONDÔNIA: A REGIONAL ANALYSIS FROM 2008 TO 2017
Abstract
Since the 1970s, migration to the Amazon and the opening of roads have been identified as important drivers of regional deforestation. In Rondônia, colonization projects were implemented within a land tenure context that altered the structure of land ownership and use, inserting the state into the national production system under strong incentives for forest suppression. Given this context, the present study aimed to analyze the influence of deforestation on the agricultural GDP of the state of Rondônia, from 2008 to 2017. Methodologically, the research is characterized as exploratory and descriptive in terms of its objectives and quantitative in terms of its approach. The empirical design was based on annual data from the municipalities of Rondônia, subsequently aggregated into seven geographic regions of the state, analyzed in a time series using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression in the R software. The results indicated a positive and statistically significant association between deforestation and agricultural GDP. Regional analysis showed a higher concentration of this association in Madeira-Mamoré and Vale do Jamari, while the regression model revealed that the variation in deforested area was associated with a significant portion of the variation in agricultural GDP during the analyzed period. It is concluded that, in Rondônia, the growth of agricultural GDP maintained a statistical relationship with the increase in deforestation between 2008 and 2017.
