CHALLENGES IN THE DIAGNOSTIC APPROACH TO PATIENTS WITH DEPRESSIVE DISORDER IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE IN PATOS, PARAÍBA
Abstract
Depressive disorders represent a major challenge for Primary Health Care (PHC), particularly due to the complexity of early diagnosis and the need for coordination with the Psychosocial Care Network. This study aimed to analyze the main challenges perceived by PHC physicians in Patos, Paraíba, regarding the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of patients with depressive disorders. This was an exploratory, descriptive, and quantitative study conducted with 33 physicians linked to the Family Health Strategy through a digital questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Jamovi software, including descriptive statistics, Cronbach’s alpha, Student’s t-test, Welch’s ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlation. The results showed higher scores in the Treatment (M = 3.87) and Screening (M = 3.85) domains, whereas Referral and Counter-referral presented the lowest mean score (M = 3.08), indicating weaknesses in care coordination. Work overload and difficulties in communication with specialized services were identified as major barriers in the diagnostic process. Although favorable results were observed in the initial stages of care, important limitations remain in the articulation of the psychosocial care network. Strengthening mental health care in PHC depends on improving service integration, care coordination, and the organization of healthcare flows.
