THE IMPORTANCE OF PHARMACEUTICAL CARE IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS: AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Systemic arterial hypertension is a chronic condition with a high global prevalence, associated with significant cardiovascular outcomes and the need for continuous care strategies focused on clinical control and therapeutic adherence. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the importance of pharmaceutical care in the follow-up of hypertensive patients, through an integrative literature review. The methodology adopted followed the steps proposed for integrative reviews, including defining the guiding question, establishing inclusion and exclusion criteria, searching databases such as MEDLINE, LILACS, and SciELO, selecting studies, extracting data, and performing content analysis. Studies published between 2021 and 2026, available in full text, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, were included, totaling 15 studies in the final sample of the review. As a result, it was observed that structured pharmaceutical interventions, such as pharmacotherapeutic follow-up, health education, and the use of digital technologies, were associated with improved treatment adherence, blood pressure control, and prevention of complications, although the findings should be interpreted considering the methodological heterogeneity of the included studies. Furthermore, it was found that the pharmacist's role promotes the rational use of medications, the identification of pharmacotherapy-related problems, and the improvement of healthcare services. It is concluded that pharmaceutical care represents a relevant strategy in the management of hypertension, with the potential to contribute to better clinical outcomes and the strengthening of the organization of health services.
