BREASTFEEDING IN THE FIRST HOUR OF LIFE: IMPORTANCE FOR THE CONTINUITY OF EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING

Abstract

Breastfeeding in the first hour after delivery, called the "golden hour", is an important practice for the promotion of neonatal health and for the strengthening of the bond between mother and baby. This study aimed to analyze the importance of early breastfeeding in maintaining breastfeeding, as well as the role of the nursing team in this process. This is an integrative literature review, carried out in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Scientific Electronic Library online (SciELO) databases, from 2015 to 2025, using the descriptors "breastfeeding", "human milk" and "early weaning". After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, eight articles were selected to compose the final sample. The results show that early initiation of breastfeeding is associated with a longer duration of exclusive breastfeeding and a reduction in neonatal morbidity and mortality. Factors such as immediate skin-to-skin contact, type of delivery and quality of care directly influence this practice. In addition, the importance of the nursing team in providing guidance and support to postpartum women from prenatal to postpartum was highlighted. It is concluded that breastfeeding in the first hour of life contributes significantly to the success of breastfeeding, and it is necessary to strengthen care and educational strategies aimed at its promotion.
