NURSING TEAM KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICES RELATED TO THE ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF PAIN IN NEWBORN IN NEONATAL UNITS: A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
Abstract
Neonatal pain is an important clinical indicator, and its identification represents a challenge for professionals working in neonatal units, especially in the care of premature newborns. Although validated instruments for pain assessment exist, such as the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS), their use still presents limitations in clinical practice. This study aimed to analyze the knowledge and practices of the nursing team related to the assessment and management of pain in premature newborns, with emphasis on the difficulties encountered in the use of the NIPS scale. This is a descriptive bibliographic review with a qualitative approach, carried out through searches in the SciELO, Virtual Health Library (VHL), PubMed, and LILACS databases, considering publications from 2013 to 2023. The analyzed studies showed that nursing professionals recognize the ability of newborns to feel pain and use behavioral and physiological signs to identify it. However, difficulties were observed in the systematic application of pain assessment scales, deficiencies in clinical records, and the need for greater professional training on the subject. It is concluded that, despite advances in neonatal care, challenges related to the assessment and management of pain in premature newborns still persist. In this context, the continuous training of nursing professionals and the proper use of standardized instruments, such as the NIPS scale, may contribute to more qualified, safe, and humanized care.
