FEAR, HINTERLANDS, AND REPRESSION: THE BALAIADA ON THE FRONTIERS OF NORTHERN GOIÁS (1838–1841)
Abstract
This article analyzes the repercussions of the Balaiada Revolt (1838–1841) in the northern region of the province of Goiás, present-day Tocantins, investigating how the Maranhão uprising produced political, military, and administrative impacts on the internal frontiers of the Brazilian Empire. Based on the analysis of provincial reports, administrative correspondence, and nineteenth-century newspapers, especially the Correio Official, the study demonstrates that the circulation of news, rumors, and movements associated with the rebellion generated an atmosphere of political fear, surveillance, and militarization in the hinterlands of northern Goiás. More than a peripheral reflection of the revolt, the region became a strategic space for territorial control and the strengthening of provincial authority during the Regency period. The article also argues that the Balaiada extended beyond the borders of Maranhão, integrating a broader hinterland dynamic of political and social circulation involving Maranhão, Piauí, and Goiás. In this context, the repression of the movement was connected to the expansion of state presence through the strengthening of the National Guard, administrative reorganization, and the intensification of mechanisms of control over populations considered potentially dangerous. Thus, the study contributes to broadening the understanding of Regency revolts from the perspective of the Empire’s internal frontiers, emphasizing the role of political fear and militarization in the consolidation of imperial order in the northern Brazilian hinterlands.
