ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES: EVIDENCE ON CYTOTOXICITY
Abstract
Objective: To describe the mechanisms and impacts of electronic cigarette use on body tissues. Methodology: An integrative literature review structured according to the PICo method, with searches conducted in the PubMed, LILACS-BVS, and SciELO databases, including studies published between 2011 and 2024 in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, selected for discussion after rigorous screening. Results: Electronic cigarette aerosols induce cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and genotoxic alterations in in vitro, in vivo, and human models. DNA damage and reduced genetic repair capacity were also observed. Final considerations: Electronic cigarettes are not biologically safe. However, methodological heterogeneity and the scarcity of longitudinal studies still limit definitive conclusions regarding their carcinogenicity.
