PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF PATIENTS CANDIDATES FOR BARIATRIC SURGERY: AN ANALYSIS OF ANGUISH, EXPECTATIONS, AND MOTIVATIONS IN THE PREOPERATIVE PERIOD

Abstract

  • Bariatric surgery has been consolidated as an important therapeutic strategy for the treatment of obesity, a condition that affects not only physical health but also the emotional, social, and psychological aspects of individuals. In this context, the preoperative period is characterized as a phase marked by different subjective experiences, involving expectations, motivations, and anxieties related to the procedure and the changes resulting from it. This is an integrative bibliographic review whose objective was to analyze the psychological aspects of patients who are candidates for bariatric surgery during the preoperative period, with an emphasis on the anxieties, expectations, and motivations present in this process. The results showed that patients frequently present expectations of improvements in health, self-esteem, and quality of life, while also experiencing feelings of anxiety, fear, and insecurity regarding the surgery and its possible repercussions. Furthermore, the motivations for undergoing the procedure are related both to the search for physical benefits and to the desire for personal and social transformation, involving perceptions related to body image. The analysis of the literature also highlighted the relevance of preoperative psychological assessment in identifying emotional demands, recognizing factors that may interfere with adaptation to treatment, and strengthening patient preparation for the changes resulting from the surgery.
