EXPERIENCE IN ADDRESSING GERIATRIC SEXUALITY IN PRIMARY CARE: CHALLENGES OBSERVED BY HEALTH PROFESSIONALS
Abstract
The sexuality of older adults remains surrounded by taboos, stigmas, and sociocultural limitations that hinder its discussion in healthcare settings, especially in Primary Health Care (PHC). Although it is recognized as an important component of quality of life and comprehensive care, this topic is still rarely explored by healthcare professionals. Objective: To report the experience related to addressing geriatric sexuality in PHC, highlighting the main challenges observed by healthcare professionals. Methodology: This is an experience report developed based on activities carried out in Basic Health Units affiliated with the Universidade do Grande Rio (Unigranrio Afya Duque de Caxias), involving PHC professionals. The experience was constructed through the application of a questionnaire and the observation of perceptions, difficulties, and practices related to addressing the sexuality of older adults. Results: It was observed that most professionals recognize sexuality as an important part of comprehensive care for older adults; however, many reported having only basic knowledge on the subject and addressing it only occasionally. Among the main challenges identified were patient resistance, sociocultural prejudices, lack of specific training, professional discomfort, and limited time during consultations. The need for greater inclusion of this topic in health-related curricula and continuing education initiatives was also highlighted. Conclusion: The experience demonstrated that important barriers still exist in addressing geriatric sexuality in PHC, reinforcing the need for educational strategies, professional qualification, and the strengthening of more humanized and comprehensive healthcare practices aimed at the older population.
