ANEMIA IN CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE PATIENTS IN BRAZIL

Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a term used to describe conditions characterized by diverse changes affecting kidney structure and function. It can lead to multiple complications associated with kidney failure, including anemia, which can manifest even in the early stages of kidney dysfunction. The objective of this study was to explore the topic of anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease in Brazil. The research consists of a systematic review conducted between March and April 2026, based on a search of articles in the literature found in the following databases: Scielo, PubMed, and LILACS, using search terms such as  “Anemia”, “Kidney Disease”, “Chronicity”, “Dialysis”, “Brazil”, “Anemia”, “Doença Renal”, “Cronicidade”, “Diálise” and “Brasil”. A total of 219 articles were identified based on the criteria applied in the methodology described, and 12 articles were selected for inclusion in this integrative review. Anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a serious public health problem due to increased rates of morbidity and mortality. To minimize the impact on patients’ quality of life and the development of secondary conditions, the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and the use of erythropoietin for treating this type of anemia must be taken into account. The development of measures aimed at early diagnosis, effective therapeutic resources, and professional training can contribute to reducing complications related to CKD associated with anemia in Brazil.
