HEALTH LITERACY AND OLDER WOMEN: IMPLICATIONS FOR SELF-CARE AND THERAPY ADHERENCE.
Abstract
Population aging in Brazil has been characterized by the feminization of old age, with a higher proportion of older women, especially those over 80 years old. This group shows a high prevalence of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, making health literacy an essential factor for self-care and therapeutic adherence. This integrative review aimed to analyze the scientific production between 2021 and 2025 regarding the level of functional health literacy among older women with chronic diseases. The research was conducted in national and international databases, following the PRISMA protocol, resulting in 11 studies included. Findings reveal a predominance of cross-sectional designs, with evidence mostly classified at level IV of the scientific hierarchy, as well as methodological heterogeneity in the instruments used (S-TOFHLA, HLQ, ASA-A, among others). Low health literacy was recurrent among older women, influenced by factors such as education, age, and sociocultural context, negatively impacting medication adherence and autonomy in care. Nevertheless, educational interventions showed potential to improve literacy levels, although longitudinal and gender-specific studies are still lacking. It is concluded that health literacy is a crucial social determinant for the quality of life of older women, requiring expanded research and the development of culturally sensitive educational strategies tailored to their needs.
