Abstract

Objectives: To detect whether there is melatonin concentration in maternal colostrum and thus support exclusive breastfeeding, given that the hormone is not available for commercial sale or in artificial milk formulas. Methods: Measurement of melatonin in maternal colostrum collected in the postpartum period, between 7–10 a.m., and quantified using the ELISA technique. Results: The study included 41 postpartum women (aged 19–40 years, gestational age of 35–41 weeks). None of the patients observed presented infections or puerperal decompensation. The mode of delivery did not show any influence on melatonin levels. Conclusions: We found the presence of melatonin in maternal colostrum. There was no correlation with the mode of delivery.
