Around 70% of the world's fresh water is used for agricultural activities. With the expected population increase, this figure is set to rise. Water resources are being depleted much faster than they can naturally replenish themselves, which could impact water availability and negatively affect crop yields. In this context, this study aimed to develop polymeric systems using biodegradable synthetic polymers and carbohydrates for rice cultivation. These systems were synthesized using a cross-linking process with sodium tetraborate, based on an L9 experimental design. We analyzed the water absorption capacity and the influence of the materials on the growth of rice seeds and the absorption of urea, with a view to regulating soil humidity and controlling ammonia volatilization. We assessed the biodegradability of the soil samples using the respirometric method. However, the results showed that the samples were not suitable for the proposed purposes because they degraded rapidly in the soil. Nevertheless, new applications for these materials can be considered, such as food coating films, since they will not come into contact with soil until disposal.
