IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON DEMAND FOR AIR SERVICES ON THE CABINDA-LUANDA ROUTE – AN ECONOMETRIC APPLICATION

The main objective of this study is to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the demand for air services on the Cabinda-Luanda route. To achieve this objective, we used a methodology that involves econometric analysis using Gretl software, based on time series data from the first quarter of 2019 to the first quarter of 2022—the periods before, during, and after COVID-19 (lifting of the sanitary fences/declaration of normality) in Angola. The data were obtained from documents (reports) from Angolan Airlines (TAAG) in Cabinda and the National Institute of Statistics of Angola (INE). Given that the pandemic in question affected all sectors of the economy, we were motivated to conduct this research, since the movement of people from Cabinda to Luanda was done solely by this route, given the geographic discontinuity with the rest of the country. The results obtained in this research reveal a negative and statistically significant relationship between Covid-19 and the demand for air services on the analyzed route, the number of flights is positively related to the demand for services under study. It is concluded from this research that Covid-19 had a negative impact on the demand for air services on the Cabinda-Luanda route.
