INFORMAL ECONOMY AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF MARKET VENDORS (“QUITANDEIROS”) IN ALTO DAS ROLAS AND CABASSANGO IN CABINDA

This article investigates the contribution of the informal economy to improving the quality of life of market vendors (“quitandeiros”) in the Alto das Rolas and Cabassango markets in Cabinda, Angola. The study stems from the growing relevance of the informal sector as a survival mechanism in the face of the limited labor absorption capacity of the formal sector. A mixed methodological approach was adopted, combining quantitative and qualitative techniques. Semi-structured surveys were applied to a sample of 100 market vendors, complemented by direct observation and statistical analysis of socioeconomic variables. The results indicate that all participants entered the informal economy out of necessity, as 91% depend exclusively on this activity to guarantee their family's livelihood. Although the informal economy provides essential income for survival, its overall impact on improving quality of life remains limited. Respondents reported low and unstable earnings, precarious housing conditions, food insecurity, high dependence on public healthcare, and lack of weekly rest. The study also identified unsafe working conditions, including environmental exposure, inadequate product storage, poor sanitation, and insufficient civil protection mechanisms. Statistical analysis confirmed a positive correlation between income and quality of life; however, both remain at low levels. The study concludes that while the informal economy helps reduce immediate socioeconomic vulnerability, it does not guarantee sustainable improvements in well-being. Policy recommendations include enhancing market infrastructure, strengthening workplace safety, and expanding social protection measures.
