Abstract

Maternal oral health has a direct impact on perinatal outcomes and is increasingly recognized as an essential component of prenatal care. Hormonal changes during pregnancy favor the development of periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis, which can trigger systemic inflammatory responses and are associated with complications such as preterm birth, preeclampsia, and low birth weight. This literature review aimed to analyze, based on recent scientific evidence, the importance of dental follow-up during pregnancy, highlighting its benefits for maternal and child health and the need for a multidisciplinary approach in prenatal care. A bibliographic search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, and LILACS databases, considering studies published between 2020 and 2024. The results showed that, despite the relevance of the topic, significant barriers still exist to accessing dental care, especially in regions with low health service coverage. Furthermore, a lack of knowledge among pregnant women regarding the relationship between oral health and pregnancy was identified. The literature reinforces that integrating dentistry into prenatal care, along with educational strategies and specific public policies, can help prevent obstetric complications and promote safe and healthy pregnancies.
