HUMAN-CENTERED CO-CREATION PRACTICES FOR FIRE PROTECTION PROJECTS IN FUEL PLANTS

Abstract

The idea of designers working with their monitors in an isolated manner, disconnected from context and real situations, is obsolete. However, the still-prevailing paradigm for design projects becomes outdated when considering the observation of monitors detached from their context. This article aims to identify human-centered co-design elements that can contribute to improving fire protection project practices in fuel plants in order to address current challenges. This research connects two design-related themes: (i) the development of work activity during the design process and (ii) participatory design approaches. Relevant aspects of the use of participatory methods and human-centered design approaches are highlighted. These methods are crucial tools for better design practices, providing analyses of the conception process and user interactions. By recognizing them as action resources, new possibilities for reflection and guidelines emerge to integrate the involved community. The study concludes that a human-centered approach integrated with national and international engineering standards enables a new project perspective, given that this is a complex problem in which user participation may contribute to generating more effective solutions. As a result, a way of addressing problems in fire protection system projects—especially escape and evacuation systems—is proposed through a set of recommendations for the three phases of a fire protection design process: before, during, and after the project.
