PSYCHOSOCIAL IMPACT OF ENDOMETRIOSIS: A REVIEW ON CHRONIC PAIN, SEXUALITY, INFERTILITY, AND RELATIONSHIPS
Abstract
Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological disease associated with persistent pain, infertility, and reduced quality of life, with significant psychosocial repercussions affecting mental health, sexuality, and interpersonal relationships. Methodology: An integrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, SciELO, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink databases. Twenty-three studies published between 2015 and 2025 in Portuguese, English, or Spanish were included. Study selection was performed independently by two reviewers, and the extracted data were organized in electronic spreadsheets and analyzed qualitatively. Results: A consistent association was found between chronic pain and higher prevalence of anxiety and depression. Dyspareunia negatively affected sexual function and intimacy, while infertility intensified emotional distress and relational conflicts. Conclusion: Endometriosis presents an interdependent psychosocial impact, requiring an interdisciplinary and patient-centered approach that integrates pain management, psychological support, and attention to sexual and relational health.
