SIMULATION-BASED EDUCATION IN TEACHING COMMUNICATION AND RECEPTION IN HEALTHCARE IN A NURSING TECHNICIAN COURSE: AN EXPERIENCE REPORT

Abstract

Simulation-Based Education has been widely used in health education as a pedagogical strategy capable of bringing the teaching process closer to real-life situations experienced in health services. The objective of this study was to report the experience of using Simulation-Based Education in teaching communication and patient reception in primary health care in a nursing technician course. Thirty students from the first module of the nursing technician course participated in the activity, within the context of the Professional Practices and Supervised Internship in Nursing Fundamentals discipline. The teaching strategy was structured in three stages: briefing, execution of the simulated scenario, and debriefing. The scenario involved the care of a hypertensive patient, with students assuming the roles of nursing professional and patient, practicing skills related to active listening, empathy, therapeutic communication, and health guidance. A high level of participant engagement and progressive development of communication skills were observed throughout the simulations. Initially, some students demonstrated insecurity in conducting the consultations; however, this difficulty was gradually overcome during the discussions held in the debriefing. It is concluded that Simulation-Based Education constitutes a promising pedagogical strategy for teaching health communication in the nursing technician course, contributing to the development of relational competencies essential for care in primary health care.
